I have a 2001 528 with the standard 16" alloy wheels and I am considering going to the 17" sport package wheels. Is thus just an even swap? Has anyone ever done this? I would like to hear what you guys think.

Well I guess a 540i has a v8? I am hoping I wont have a problem going 1" larger. Do you know how the speedometer works and if it can be adjusted?

Everything will be normal.. every e39 has the same wheel radius, when rims are biger tires are smaller.. no problem for you...
for example I had 15" 205/65/15 and now 17" 235/45/17 .. (45 meens 45%of235)

on google you can find wheel size calculator

for example
