What does E60 stand for?
#1
Posted 05 August 2004 - 07:33 PM
E60 is BMW's internal designation for the new 5 series, 2004 - Current. Every BMW model has its own internal designation. For example the touring model of the new 5 series is called the E61 and the old 5 series is called the E39. In more detailed terms, E60 stands for Entwicklung 60 (development 60) which can be translated into Evolution 60. The 60 means that this is BMW's 60th model design since the beginning of the company. Not all designs are put into production, such as concept cars, which also receive an E designation.

In German, if you refer to the 5-series you say "fünfer", meaning the 5-series. 3-series is "dreier", 1-series "einser", 7-series "siebener" and so on.

The E as an abbreviation for Entwicklungscode has apparently come to and end, as all the cars you are referring to without an E are newer projects. BMW has apparantly avoided having the same code as M-B (horror) which they would have had if they had continued with E100, E101 and so on. Instead they just changed to F for "Fahrzeug" and hence could start all over again with 01. Nice. And also marked the uniqueness of BMW by not using the E for Rolls and Minis.

I googled "Fahrzeug" for the english translation and I came up with it as being the word for "vehicle", that correct?
