Hello, Does anyone have experience with issues on the automatic tailgate lift mechanism? Mine has been not cooperating when cold, it unlocks, but doesn't go up on it's own and I have to push it up manually. It will then usually shut fine. It's like it wants to open, sounds like the motors are running but is encountering too much resistence or doesn't have enough power - I do have a newer battery. After driving, it's fine, though it does seem to be straining a bit when opening/closing. Any help and advice is appreciated, is there any regular maintenance on these. I've got an '08 with about 65k miles...thanks!

Hi, I have an 08 535 Xi T that in cold weather the tailgate also had difficulties, specifically, it wouldnt stay up and would edge down slowly, eventually I noticed that the right hand (not powered) chuck would have its plastic cover all wrong and then would POP loudly after a few minutes (like realy loud like a flat tire on a road bike) The dealer replaced the non motorized side (right hand, passenger side) and it has been fine since, done under warranty too which was ending this week!

It might not have anything to do with your battery, you should check out the other side...mine was pretty rusted as you might have noticed, there is a lot of water accumulation up there where the chuck is fixed to the car.

We have a similar problem with our 2006 530xiT. Gate stops opening automatically once temperature gets around -15 to -20 below zero (F). The dealer found no problem with the telescoping struts, but I do notice some ice buildup around the attachment to the gate. I have considered replacing the right sided gas filled strut, but have not yet done so.

I wonder if any other northerners have encountered and solved this problem. There are lots of wagons in Scandanavia exposed to similar temperatures....perhaps somebody across the pond could chime in.

I have an '06 530 xi which once in awhile does the same. I noticed the right strut plastic cover had split so I taped it up with some black duct tape. Seems to have solved the problem. I'll wait to replace it in the Spring if it becomes an issue.

Last month I had similar problems as ziggy2308 described with my 2009 530d. I sprayed some oil into the telescopes via the small gaps in the plastic covers. I removed all the dirt I could with a cotton towel, when the tailgate was wide open. It's as good as new now. Before the oiling and cleaning my wife was not able to close the tailgate. It has been very cold in Finland during February (-30 c/-22 F).

Thanks for this - just replaced my manual strut and noticed that the boot (@ roughly 10C) needs a slight lift to get it going - I'll give it a spray with oil and clean it up at the weekend hopefully that will sort
