I love the 545 99% of the time, but if the dealership can't get this fixed there is no way I'll continue to drive it.
I had an '04 530i with Steptronic until a month ago, and I never had any issues with it.

I am using Moritz BMW where I bought the car. They didn't seem to be aware of this being an issue, but I forward them one of the threads from this board. The service advisor said he thought a software upgrade would fix the issue, but my car has been upgraded to 16.2 already. In fact, the problem didn't manifest itself until after the 16.2 upgrade.

I may be inclined to join the group after today. As murphy's law would have it, the dealership can't seem to recreate the slam (it only happens once a week at best), and all of my software is completely up to date. They gave it to one of their managers to drive home last night to see if he encounted the problem, but I'm sure the car will be on good behavior.
My dealership is absolutely great with customer service, but service-wise they've never been very good at doing anything "out of the box" in regards to electical/IDrive issues so I doubt they'll be able to fix this issue. I'll know more by the end of today, and am going to be really unhappy if I'm stuck with a $60,000 car that makes me a nervous wreck everytime I approach a stop sign.

I have a 545i on order due in late June. I contacted my sales person at Mountain View BMW and he claims that the slamming isn't nearly as severe as people say, that BMW is aware of the issue and that the new software upgrade has solved the problem.
Not sure what to believe right now.... but its hard to believe they've nailed the problem give all the comments above. Jeez, this reminds of the Audi 5000 problems in the mid-80's.
I don't know if you've seen this, but the Toyota Prisus is having a problem where the car complete dies when it reaches highway speeds and they can't figure out what is going on. It was in the national newspapers two weeks ago and is getting a lot of chatter on edmunds.com. Hopefully this e60 problem isn't going to get the same attention and they can resolve it quickly- but good grief-- the poll last week showed 42% of owners have had the problem-- scary.

1) The issue is every bit as severe as people say. Just think how much fun the car will be to drive when you are worried at every stop sign that your car may lunge into the intersection with the velocity of being rear-ended at moderate speed.
2) According to my dealership, BMWNA doesn't have any info about this problem existing.
3) I was told just this morning that my car was already updated to all of the latest software, so my dealership says nothing more can be done until a new software version is released in the future.
I would highly recommend taking your new car for a week long trial before you purchase -- this problem is not "minor", and if you end up lunging into a bicycle rider I doubt they will think it's minor either.
