Hey guys I was going to change my oil for a 2004 525i I just bought. This is my first BMW, so I was wondering what is a good brand oil to use and what weight/number? What kind of oil filter should I use also. I bought Mobil 1 5w-30 and a K&N Filter. Should I be using another oil/filter? Suggestions? Sorry for the beginner question.

Thanks for your response. So I purchased the wrong oil? Is my oil filter fine or would you recommend something else? Thank you

your car wont blow up with the wrong oil, its just not bmw approved. the 0w-40 is on the lighter end of the 40 weight scale, and the 0w will flow better when cold.

the filter should be just fine.

If you don't use the BMW recommended LL-01 (Long-Life) spec oil, you may want to change it more frequently than iDrive says.

Idrive...phhh.. Flip it the bird and do it proudly when your adding your own type of oil lol..What you have is fine make sure to watch the oil filter on the next change to see how it held up. Also if you have a higher mileage situation use a 5w40 Rotella Shell oil (walmart) its a high mile change , high detergent and shouldnt burn off
